Cara and Co @ Westfield Sydney

Friday, 06/01/2012

Okay peeps, I have finally decided to post Cara and Co after contemplating for several months. Slap my selfish-ness, initially I was not keen to post it coz I dont want Cara to get popular too soon (Cara please dont crucify me). Imagine if they starting to intro '1 month to book a table' policy. What a nightmare.

Oh well after all I am not a heartless soul and I am more than happy to tell the universe how AWESOME Cara and Co is.

Cara & Co is located on level 4 of Westfield. How easy to find Cara? It is easy but tricky. Here's my story. Let's start with my bad habit that I always carry across regardless the country, timezone, or place ... as usual I left everything to last minute to find the exact whereabout. Feeling helpless & lazy to walkaround Westfield, I went to 'INFORMATION' hoping for some miracle.
Me               : Hi, I am looking for Cara and Co.
Concierge 1  : Sorry...what's the name again? what is Ca_ _ and...?
Me              : Cara & Co, C_A_R_A (I had to spell it), Fashion store and restaurant, the restaurant is  inside the clothing store
Concierge 1 : Sorry I dont know, what's the name again let me ask my collegue' (helllo...INFORMATION desk were you there for real? Did you pass training program?)
Concierge 2 : Excuse me, are you looking for Cara & Co, Oh yeah ... Cara and Co, level 4, next to Sambag, on the top of Mulberry'.
Ahaaa now we are on the same page, what a life saver. Quest sorted.

Found it ...Cara & Co shop the clothing store, the restaurant supposed to be inside the clothing store. I stepped in & still trying to find the restaurant...till I saw the 'Restaurant' signage at the really end of my right side. Hhmm I still had the weird feeling (in a good way though) to know the restaurant is inside the clothing store. Anyway as I stepped towards the restaurant, my eyes really wander around the store (pretty massive store) enjoying all the tiny bits of decorations, toys, retro games, accesories or anything funky and edgy. The shop looks more like a showroom to me, spacious, tasteful, and entertaining.

Reached the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly waiter - who end up recommending good champgane to us. Pity I cant remember the brand of the champagne. It was not Moet, 1 level down from Moet. Menu - very simple and clean, not much description on each though, they had catchy names for the dishes, e.g. Caesar in disguise, In tune with tuna, Fish united etc. We had the summer menu, ordered 3 course dinner and each of us tried to order different stuff, please enjoy my photos ...

Cara & Co shop front...hope this help finding the restaurant
Entrance to the restaurant, 'Restaurant' sign in neon lightings
Pre-Starter - Cauliflower pure with eggyolk - silky smooth, subtle with mix of textures - grainy yet smooth from the yolk & cauliflower pure, plus crunchiness from the little cracker - well combined
Can I have all 4 for myself?
Pre-starter - Seaweed rice crispies with ?? Sorry I forgot the details

My Starter - 'Smoke a Crab Cigar' - crab cigar with spinach cream, basil oil, parmesan jelly and nitrogen grapefruit. Crab cigar is such an awesome starter, light, thin crunchy cigar, generous crab filling with well balanced sauce. Who need real cigar really? Time to convert.
Friend's Starter - Caesar in Disguise - Green gazpacho, glazed chicken oyster, parmesan crisp - Awww so pweeety, parmesan crisp was delicious, chicken was moist and succulent, the color of the sauce is quite misleading..hehe...it looks strong and thick but it was mild and not overpowering at all.
Friend's starter - 'In Tune with Tuna' - tuna, different types of tomatoes, cream of verbena, puffed wild rice. My friend raved about it, according to him 'really fresh tuna & tasty tomatoes'. Pretty looking and resembles a garden.
Friend's Main - Beef Story - fillet tartare, slowly cooked sirloin, glazed potato, lettuce, pickled tomato, Bearnaise sauce
Sides - Greenies on a plate. Fresh and crunchy, with a hint of vinegar.
My Main -Perched on cous cous - silver perch with hand rolled cous cous, baby fennel, sheep's yoghurt, apple confit and shallot jus. I was not sure how the sheep's yoghurt will work with the fish ....but wowww the nicely cooked fish went well with the fennel, potato, the shallot jus and the sheep's yoghurt (didnt taste yoghurt-ey at all). I was really pleased with my main, such a nice portion, presentation & quite light.
The silverish rocky looking bits...not sure what they were but how cool does it look?

Dessert - In Rhubarb we trust - rhubarb, yoghurt and lime leaf. Yoghurt was very fresh and natural. If you are leaning towards the fresh and sourish department then this baby is yours.
Dessert - Smurf's and Violets - Belgian chocolate, strawberry and violet
Hand Towel soaked in Water
Hand Towel after the soaking process, ready to use

These days our ideal dining place is a restaurant where we can chit chat without screaming at each other (sign of maturity sighh), spacious (ie. you are not sitting super close to the next table), warm feeling, nice food & service of course. Cara does fulfill our requirements and they have never disappoint us so far and we have visited Cara 4x. We are not bothered at all with the restaurant being inside a clothing store/ in a shopping mall even though I do feel majority of Sydney people are still not used to dine in a shopping mall. Yes it is a brand new concept for Sydney - clothing store mixed with restaurant and it is in a shopping mall,  yeah why not? it is a new thing but a change is good sometimes. Hurry ..book a table and step into a hidden gem in the city. I am sure you will love Cara in no time, they showcase the best fashion collection in store and showcasing art on a plate too - trust me, they taste as good as how they look.
PS. I will post their winter menu soon.

Happy Holiday

Hello all,

Hope everyone had a great Easter break this year. My Bali holiday started a few days ago...and I am @ full scale holiday mode at the moment - not doing much apart from sleeping, napping, spa + massage, a bit of shopping, piggin out, and some exercise (trust me  not much happening in this department). Happy weekend everyone.

Swimming hard before piggin out @ nite
Waiting for sunset
Balinese Rijstafel @ Bumbi Bali restaurant - worth to starve yourself for the whole day. The platter includes 2 types of rice (white and yellow) + dessert + tropical fruits - from grilled fish, satays, green beans, lime chicken, sweet stewed pork (soft and juicy), chilli water spinach stir fried, and other items. If I guess it right every bowl represents sweetness, salty, hot, sour, etc - everything went well together & worth the investment

Singapore Holiday Photos

August 2011

Last year I visited Singapore for a few days during my short holiday and I stayed around Sentosa area for a change. Sentosa had undergone massive transformations for the past several years and looking pretty awesome now. They have Universal Studios, Casino, beaches (Siloso and Palawan), natures, Museum, Underwater world, shopping area etc. It was a good decision to stay there, quite relaxing and very different from the hustle bustle Orchard Road. Too many places to visit within Sentosa, too little time, what to do?
Singapore Merlion - Lion city

F O O D
  • HERSHEY's chocolate @ Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)
Chocolate lovers rejoice, Hershey's is your heaven indeed. They sell other stuff too apart from chocolates, e.g. soft toys, tees, stationary, etc.
  • Garrett Popcorn @ RWS
Savoury or sweet popcorns? Take your pick.
  • Food Republic foodcourt @ Vivo City
From Sentosa, take the train (MRT) to Harbourfront station - linked to Vivo City. Head to the foodcourt level and go crazy ... from Roti Prata, Bakuteh (pork ribs soup), Popiah (Singapore spring roll) to dimsum.
  • Toastbox @ RWS
Singapore style coffee shop, famous for their Kaya Toast (toast with coconut jam)
  • Breadtalk @ RWS
One of my fave breadshop  in Singapore, I love their 'Bakwa Delights' (bread with dried pork fillings) and Taro-cotta (taro bread).

Toastbox @ Resorts World Sentosa
Toastbox Kaya Toast - a must have if your visit Singapore, thick toast with melty  butter and coconut jam, great for breakfast/ afternoon tea

Food Republic foodcourt @ Vivo City - Oyster omelette, love it !!
Food Republic foodcourt @ Vivo City - Rojak, fruits with sweet brown sauce and sprinkled with peanuts (pineapple, fried tofu, cucumber, and jicama/ bengkoang.
Food Republic foodcourt @ Vivo City - noodle soup with egg and ikan bilis (salty fish), was okay..not keen on having ikan bilis on my noodle soup, broth was really good
Food Republic foodcourt @ Vivo City - Popiah, ie. Singapore style spring roll (boiled egg, jicama, peanuts, lettuce, chilli sauce, shrimp/ prawns). I wish we have popiah in Sydney...
Hershey's choc shop @ Resorts World Sentosa

S H O P P I N G
  • Resorts World Sentosa (RWS)
Mainly branded items, hhmmm my pocket is not yet in sync with shopping @ RWS
  • Vivo City
The closet shopping mall to RWS, has good mix of medium range brands, e.g. Zara, Uniqlo, Topshop. Need to take the train (MRT) from Sentosa to Harbourfront station.

PLACES to VISIT
  • Universal Studios
I heart theme parks no matter where so it is a must visit for me =)
Bought so many junks there, e.g. mouse pad, tees, key chain, pen, magnet, etc. *** tourist style shopping ***. The heat was unbearable on the day we went to Universal Studios. I was like a walking sweatbox, didnt play much though, too exhausted dealing with the heat and humidity,
  • Siloso Beach
Siloso beach is kinda cute too, a bit man made if I compare it with Bondi beach or Balmoral Beach in Sydney, but it's still pretty. Siloso offers lots of outdoor activities (cycling, segway, eco walk trail, Aquarium, etc) and of course worth visiting when you can ride the Siloso free bus.

Universal Studios @ Sentosa - Shrek Castle
Cycling around Siloso Beach Sentosa? Best to do it super early in the morning or after 7pm, the heat is insane
Sentosa - Siloso
Sentosa cable car
Singapore Flyer

ACCOMODATION
  • Hard Rock hotel
Funky hotel with lots of entertainment throughout the night (e.g. live band etc), big gym and massive room. Excellent + friendly service, you will not get dissapointed.

Hard Rock gigantic pool to melt Singapore's heat
Hard Rock Hotel signature guitar for toiletries
Check this out ... 'Girl's Thing' ... ladies, how special do we feel? I wonder if they have 'Boy's Thing' version too ??

PAUL's Famous Hamburgers

Many of us probably forgotten simplicity of the old school hamburger as these days we are quite spoilt with choices of glorified burgers, i.e. Wagyu burger, Built your own burger, Japanese style burger (using rice as the bun), Foie Grass Burger, etc - and we perhaps forgot basic burger or where to get them in Sydney.
I do know where we can get them *** wink wink ***
We can still get old school burger in Sylvania, 40 mins from CBD, down South. Yeah I know it's a bit of an effort to get there, petrol probably costs as much as the burger but it is worth it.
Paul's Hamburgers - a well established  family run burger joint, has been an icon for the shire since the 1950s. There's nothing fancy about the shop, retro-ish feel, pure & simple and popular amongst the locals (and non local like me). The burger went well with their home made pineapple crush, which can be bought in a 1/2 litre or 1 litre jug. Happy trying.

Chinese New Year 2012 - Day 7

Sunday, 29/01/2012

Summer has landed (late) in Sydney, it was 30 degrees on the day, super humid and sunny. I just have to proudly announced the arrival of summer as we have been having crap weather during summer. Anyway ... enough weather update from moi ...
My program for the day, exposing my friend who has been hiding in his cave all this long to more eating places around Sydney. He has never been to Mamak OMG, what a crime...can you believe it?

LUNCH @ MAMAK Chatswood (1-5 Railway st, Chatswood, Sydney)
Was a mini CNY casual lunch, didnt order much on the day, errr my usual capacity is usually doubled hahaha. I was hungry but my appetite somehow was toned down due to the weather and my friend is on diet program too.
Roti Canai - fresh and fluffy, I cant choose between the dahl/ curry sauce, I love both. The dahl sauce is thicker and more grainy, whilst the curry sauce is more runny and smooth.
A dozen satay - 1/2 chicken, 1/2 beef. We vote for chicken.
Mee Goreng - with fish cake, prawns, tofu puff and other goodies.

DESSERT @ YummyBerry (190 Military Road, Neutral Bay, Sydney)
I was in sugar deficiency mode after lunch, my fro-yo craving kicked on, lucky my friend was super nice to take me to YummyBerry. I feel bad for ruining his diet, coz he had frozen yoghurt too at the end...well look at the bright side, he bought the $5 cup instead of the $10 tub. I was a bit disappointed, they had no green tea flavour again. I had mango & raspberry yoghurt, equally good but I really really miss their green tea yoghurt.  I might have to come back this weekend to checkout if green tea is back.
